As the 300 guests entered the ballroom at Mar-a-Lago on February 11, 2008 for the 17th Annual Hab-a-Hearts Luncheon, they were dazzled by color… the tables featured tangerine table cloths with fuchsia orchid centerpieces and napkins with colorful Brighton goodie bags hanging on each chair. During the complimentary wine reception, guests proceeded to spend almost $25,000 on over 280 silent auction items.
Auctioneer and Committee Member Jim Accursio served as emcee and started the luncheon by introducing Prudie Anderson, Chair, and Pat Schweikart, Co-Chair. Prudie and Pat thanked the Committee Members for their hard work and all the guests for attending and then introduced Otis and Donna Brown as the 2008 King and Queen of Hearts. While dining on filet mignon and enjoying informal modeling of fashions from the Shoppes of Plaza del Mar, Accursio raised $17,000 in a live auction that included golf for three with Dr. Gary Wiren at Trump, brunch for four at Mar-a-Lago, two engravable bottles of Johnny Walker Blue donated by Diageo and a heart-shaped Nantucket purse made by Otis Brown. Amy Bernard, of Boynton Beach, won the raffle for a women’s Rolex watch.
Other Committee Members include: Janet Austino, Maria Beaudouin, Cathy Bedard, Dee Behnke, Donna Brown, Nancy Cashman, Madelyn Christopher, Laura Cianci, Anne Coulson, Joanne Driscoll, Lin Evans, Judy Farmer, Ann Growney, Allison Rogers Haft, Beverly Keller, Helen Logothetis, Beverlee Miller, Craig Mitchell, Ann Opperthauser, Linda Reichenstein, Sheila Rinker, Dr. Marianne Toroyan, Marie Tynan, Marianne Vellis, Sue Wagner, Adrianne Weissman, Barbara Whitford, Babbette Wolff, Barbara Benson Wymer and Marjorie Zimmerman.
This lunch netted over $121,000 for the Cafeteria Employment Training Program at Palm Beach Habilitation Center. For more information about the Hab-a-Hearts or to receive an invitation, please call Roxanne Jacobs, Director of Development, at 561-965-8500 or e-mail rjacobs@pbhab.com.
